Developing Local Poultry for National Food Security
Prof. Dr. Ir. Ismoyowati, S.Pt., M.P., IPU was born in Klaten in July 1969. She completed the Bachelor (S1) program of Animal Production at Jenderal Soedirman University, the Master (S2) program of Animal Science at Gadjah Mada University, then continued her education in the Doctoral (S3) program of Animal Science at Gadjah Mada University.
Since 1996 Prof. Dr. Ir. Ismoyowati, S.Pt., M.P., IPU has been a permanent lecturer at Jenderal Soedirman University. During her 27 years of dedication at Unsoed, her research focus is genetic improvement of indigenous local poultry, such as local ducks and local chickens. Some of her recent research include: “The Effect of Dietary Safflower Oil (Carthamus Tinctorius. L) and Inositol Supplementation on Biochemical Profile of Blood of Female Sentul Chickens”, “Date Extract Supplementation in Ringer Lactate-Egg Yolk Extender on Post-Thawing Quality of Pelung Chicken Spermatozoa”, “Egg Production, Egg Quality, and Fatty Acid Profile of Indonesian Local Ducks Fed with Turmeric”, and “Developing Strategy to Reduce the Mortality of Native Chicken Using Qualitative Modeling”.
In accordance with Prof. Ismoyowati, improving genetic quality is needed to improve the performance of local poultry for both meat and egg production. Currently. Prof. Ismoyowati is creating a strain called Unsoed-1 Chicken, which is a cross between village chicken and Kedu chicken. The advantage of the strain is that it has good immunity to AI (Avian Influenza) and ND (Newcastle Disease) viruses. Pure strains of village chickens have higher egg production than Kedu chickens. Meanwhile, Kedu chickens have a higher egg weight when compared to village chickens. AI and ND are viral diseases in poultry that result in decreased egg production and hatchability.
“The contribution of meat and egg products in Indonesia mostly comes from poultry, but around 70-80% of poultry seeds are still imported from abroad. The role of local poultry is very small. We are trying to develop local poultry to increase the population in order to increase the contribution of poultry meat and egg production,” she said.
In her scientific oration when she was inaugurated as a professor, she brought the theme of genetic diversity of local ducks in Indonesia and its contribution to local food endurance. Prof. Ismoyowati has received many research grants including from the Directorate of Research and Community Service (Direktorat Riset dan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat or DRPM) and Unsoed BLU research. Currently, she actively manages the Livestock Bulletin Journal, Agripet Journal, and Tropical Livestock Journal.
