UNSOED Lecturer becomes Invited Speaker in China-ASEAN Mariculture Industry Development Forumvelopment Forum
[unsoed.ac.id, Fri, 05/04/24] Recognition or recognition of the expertise of lecturers is an important thing that needs to be improved in terms of participation in scientific forums both at the national and international levels.
Prof. Maria Dyah Nur Meinita, a lecturer at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK) and Coordinator of the Unsoed Master of Agricultural Biotechnology Study Program, had the opportunity to become an invited speaker at the international conference, “2024 China-ASEAN Mariculture Industry Development Forum”. The forum coincided with the “2024 Hong Kong-Zhuhai Macau Marine Industry Development Forum” conference which was held on March 4-8, 2024 at Sun Yat Sen University, Zhuhai, China.
The main host of the conference was Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory, Sun Yat Sen University, and the co-organizer was Xiamen University, Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fisheries Sciences, Shanghai Ocean University, Guangdong Ocean Association, and Zhuhai Youth Association of Marine Industry Advancement.
“This forum is a meeting of researchers and stakeholders in the marine industry to present their research in the field of Marine and Mariculture Industry, especially researchers who focus on the algae, fish and shrimp industries. There are 6 main topics focused on in this scientific conference forum, namely shrimp aquaculture industry, fish farming industry, algae farming industry, aquaculture and green products, development of marine biopharmaceutical and financial empowerment of the marine industry,” explained Prof. Maria.
The scientific forum was attended by around 200 researchers from China, ASEAN, and Europe. Prof. Maria delivered a presentation entitled, “Biodiversity and Bioprospecting of Indonesian Seaweed”. In the presentation, Prof. Maria presented the research she has conducted in the field of marine macroalgae biodiversity and biotechnology in Indonesia.
In the forum, there was also a special meeting for the field of algae with the topic of Regional Seaweed (Algae) Big Science Plan as part of the China-Asean Cooperation Forum on Sustainable Development of Seaweed Aquaculture, which in this special section there was also a discussion on research for the current and future development of seaweed.
In addition to researchers from China, algae researchers from ASEAN and Europe also attended the forum: Prof. Juliet Ann Brodie (Natural History Museum, London, UK) presented a topic on Innovative Seaweed Aquaculture: Towards a Global Seaweed Conservation Strategy for the Long-Term Sustainability of the Industry, Prof. Elizabeth Cottier-Cook (Scottish Association of Marine Science) who is also a seaweed researcher from Global Seaweed presented Progressive Management Pathway for the Improvement of Seaweed Biosecurity, Prof. Dr. Elizabeth Cottier-Cook (Scottish Association of Marine Science), Prof. Dr. Elizabeth Cottier-Cook (Scottish Association of Marine Science) who is also a seaweed researcher from Global Seaweed. Lim Phaik Eem (University of Malaya) presented Sustainable Seaweed Aquaculture Industry in Malaysia Amid Climate Change and also Dr. Eka Sunarwidhi Prasedya (University of Mataram) presented an update on the genetic diversity of Kappaphycus and Gracilaria in Indonesia.
Prof. Tao Liu, the President of the China-ASEAN Seaweed Base Cooperation, appreciated Prof. Maria for the participation and contribution in the development of seaweed. Prof. Maria stated that seaweed or marine macroalgae is a potential marine resource that has biodiversity and bioprospection to be developed in various fields.
“Collaboration and synergy between academics, government, society, and industry are needed to develop seaweed into more beneficial products to human life. By attending scientific forums at the international level and meeting seaweed researchers from various countries can increase our knowledge of the latest technological developments and also increase cooperation networks both with researchers and industry,” she concluded.
