Exploring Animal Taxonomy for Cultivation and Conservation of Freshwater Fish
Prof. Dr Agus Nuryanto, S.Si.M.Si completed his bachelor’s degree (S.Si.) at Jenderal Soedirman University in 1994, his master’s degree (M.Si) at Bogor Agricultural Institute in 2000, and doctorate at Bogor Agricultural Institute in 2008. During his bachelor’s education, he became an awardee of Ikatan Dinas Scholarship dedicated from the government. Then after undergoing the master’s program, he was covered by the Postgraduate Program Scholarship (Beasiswa Program Pasca Sarjana or BPPS). Afterward, he received a DAAD Sandwich Program Scholarship to University of Bremen (Germany) when he was pursuing his doctorate. Furthermore, he became a lecturer at Unsoed since 1997, Prof. Dr. Agus Nuryanto, S.Si. M.Si. was inaugurated as a professor in the field of Animal Taxonomy at Jenderal Soedirman University on December 8th, 2020.
Prof. Dr. Agus Nuryanto, S.Si. M.Si. has conducted lots of research. Most of his research focuses on the field of animal taxonomy (systematic) with the object of the research mostly on fish and Crustaceae in the past few years. He proposed that he has had a research interest in fish as the objects since his bachelor education. He chose this focus since his assignment as a lecturer had to be in line with his bachelor program (the scholarship he received required the recipient to become a lecturer). Another reason, he has had a high interest and curiosity in fish since childhood.
In his scientific oration, Prof. Dr. Agus Nuryanto, S.Si. M.Si conveyed about the general systematics entitled “Revealing Identify, Reaping Benefits”. He stated that his research could help others understand the identity (identification both morphologically and molecularly) of animals so that it could be furtherly utilized in preparing appropriate efforts when carrying out conservation. He connected Covid-19 as a background in his scientific oration because of a similar concept when detecting whether or not someone is positive for covid, it is important to identify RNA (virus). While DNA is for identification in animals. This is highly important to understand the status of species in an organism in order to know how to cultivate and conserve these animals in the future.
Prof. Dr. Agus Nuryanto, S.Si. M.Si obtained a research grant from Nagao Environmental Foundation (NEF) Japan for research on freshwater fish systematics throughout Java in 2010-2012. Other grants that are often obtained by him are from Directorate of Research & Community Service (Direktorat Riset & Pengabdian Masyarakat or Dikti) since 2018, and from BLU Unsoed since 2010 until now. He has a high initiative and is diligent in publishing his research results both nationally and internationally. He said that every year he always publishes them and has once published five titles in one year. Some of the journal articles were published in Journal of Molluscan Studies, International Journal of Marine Science, Malaysian Applied Biology, Egyptian Journal of Biology and Fisheries, etc.
Prof. Dr. Agus Nuryanto, S.Si. M.Si is also actively involved as a reviewer for national and international journals. One of the journals managed by him as a managing board is the Indonesian Ictiology journal (Indonesian and English versions). It could not be counted how often he has become a reviewer of articles and journals indexed by Scopus. International articles that have been reviewed by him include Biolnflation and Molecular Ecology. In addition, he has also been trusted to be a thesis examiner for master students at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgia.
